Sending large files from a phone, without losing quality

Most large files start on a phone, and the convenient way to send them quietly shrinks everything. What to use on iPhone and Android, and the three settings that keep a long upload alive.

Most large files start life on a phone now. A 4K clip, a burst of photos from an event, a scanned document — and the phone is also where sending them goes wrong most often, because the convenient options quietly shrink everything.

Here is how to get a large file off a phone at full quality, on either platform.

The problem with the share sheet

Tapping Share and picking a messaging app is the path of least resistance, and it is where quality goes to die. Most chat apps re-compress photos and video hard — a 60 MB clip can arrive as a few megabytes, softened and blocky.

Worse, it is invisible. Nothing warns you, and the version on your phone still looks perfect. The recipient just quietly gets something worse.

Where an app offers "send as file" or "original quality", use it. Where it does not, use something else for anything that matters.

Sending from an iPhone

Photos and video at full quality. In Photos, select the items, tap Share, and choose a method that transfers files rather than displaying them. If you use AirDrop to another Apple device, quality is preserved — it is the best option when the other person is in the room.

Mail Drop handles up to 5 GB through the Mail app and expires after 30 days. It is genuinely useful and tied to your Apple account.

Watch the HEIC conversion. iPhones shoot HEIC by default, and iOS often converts to JPEG when sharing to a non-Apple destination — another lossy generation. If the recipient is editing, send the originals: Settings, Photos, and set Transfer to Mac or PC to "Keep Originals".

Files app is the way to get at documents, downloads and iCloud Drive contents rather than just the camera roll.

Sending from Android

Nearby Share / Quick Share is the AirDrop equivalent for someone nearby, and it keeps the original.

The Files app gets you the real filesystem, which is where a downloaded video or an export from a camera app lives.

Check "send as document" in whichever chat app you use. Most have the option; almost nobody knows it is there. Sending "as photo" is the compressing path.

Using a browser, which is usually the answer

For anything going to someone who is not standing next to you, a transfer link from the phone's browser is the most reliable route: no app to install, no re-encoding, and the recipient gets exactly the bytes you selected.

Open the site, tap to pick files from your photo library or Files, and you get a link back. It is encrypted in the browser before it uploads, and without an account you can send up to 100 MB — enough for a document, a set of photos, or a short clip.

The QR code is worth knowing about for phone-to-laptop: generate the link on the phone, show the code, point the laptop's camera at it. It saves emailing yourself.

Keeping an upload alive on a phone

Phones are hostile to long uploads. Three things help:

  • Keep the tab in the foreground. Both platforms suspend background tabs aggressively; a backgrounded upload can stall or die.
  • Turn off the auto-lock for a large transfer, or keep tapping the screen. A locked phone often means a suspended upload.
  • Prefer wifi, and stay put. Moving between cells is the single most common cause of a dropped transfer. Chunked uploads — which is how uploads work here — mean a blip costs the slice in flight rather than the whole file, but standing still still helps.

Watch mobile data, too. A 3 GB upload over a metered connection is a real cost, and phones will happily do it without asking.
