Terms of service

The short version

Send things that are yours to send. We store what you upload and hand it back to whoever holds the link, until the day you told us to delete it. We do not read encrypted transfers, we cannot recover a lost key, and we remove anything illegal as soon as we know about it.

Using the site is how you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use it.

Who can use it

You need to be 16 or older. If you are using BetterFileTransfer for a company, you are confirming you are allowed to agree to this on its behalf.

Your account

Signing in is an email address and a six-digit code, so your account is exactly as safe as your inbox. Codes are single-use and expire in minutes, and forwarding one hands somebody your account.

You are responsible for what is sent from your account, including by anyone you gave access to. If you think somebody else is in it, write to contact@betterfiletransfer.com and we will end every session on it.

What you may not send

Do not use BetterFileTransfer for any of this:

• Anything illegal where you are or where we are, and child sexual abuse material above all else.
• Malware, phishing kits, or anything built to break into somebody else's system.
• Work that is not yours to distribute.
• Unsolicited bulk mail, or using our link mailing to spam people.
• Content that harasses or threatens a specific person.
• The service as permanent hosting, a content delivery network, or a backup drive. It moves files between people; it is not a filesystem.

Report a link that breaks this at contact@betterfiletransfer.com, with the link and what is wrong with it. We cannot open an encrypted transfer to check, but we can always delete one.

Your files stay yours

Uploading gives us no ownership of anything and we make no claim on your work. You give us one narrow permission and nothing beyond it: to store the bytes and serve them to whoever opens the link, for as long as that transfer lives. The permission ends when the transfer does.

We do not scan your files to build a profile, to train anything, or to sell you something. On an encrypted transfer we could not, even if we wanted to.

Links are keys

A share link is a credential. Anyone holding it can download the files and we cannot tell one holder from another, so forwarding a link is the same as forwarding the files. If one ends up somewhere it should not be, revoke it from your dashboard: the files are deleted and the link breaks for everybody at once.

On an encrypted transfer the key is yours alone. Lose it and the files are unrecoverable, by us as much as by you. That is the point of it, not a fault we can repair.

Limits

Every tier has limits on transfer size, file count, stored bytes, link lifetime, and how many people we will mail a link to. They are enforced as you upload rather than billed afterwards. We may slow down or refuse traffic that is plainly automated abuse.

Paying for Pro

Pro is $10 a month, or $100 a year — twelve months for the price of ten. Both are billed through our payment provider, with no setup fee and no minimum term. Cancel whenever you like: it runs to the end of the period you have already paid for, then drops back to the free tier.

Payments are not refunded, including part-months, unused months, and the remainder of a year paid up front. Cancelling stops the next charge rather than returning the last one. This is why the free tier is not a trial with a countdown, so you can put real work through it before paying us anything.

Prices can change and we will tell you before a change reaches your bill. Links already set never to expire keep working when a plan ends; what changes is what you can do next.

Availability

We work to keep this running, but it is offered as it is, with no uptime promise. Maintenance happens, providers have bad days, and a transfer in flight can fail.

Keep your own copy of anything you cannot afford to lose. This is a way to send a file, not the place to keep the only one.

Suspension and removal

We can remove a transfer or suspend an account when these terms are broken, when the law requires it, or when something is doing damage to the service. Where we are able to tell you why, we will. Anything illegal goes straight to removal.

You can stop at any time. Asking us to delete your account is enough, and how to do that is on the privacy page.

Liability

So far as the law allows, the service comes without warranties, and we are not liable for lost files, lost keys, lost profit, or a link that did not arrive. Where we are liable, it is capped at what you have paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

Nothing here removes a right you have under consumer law that cannot be signed away.

Changes to these terms

These terms can change. The date at the top moves when they do, and carrying on using the site afterwards is how you accept the new version. If a change is significant and you have an account, we will mail you about it.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the country in which BetterFileTransfer is established. If you are a consumer, you keep the protections of the mandatory law of the country you live in, and you can bring a claim in your local courts.
